Here is a newspaper article which appeared in the Nation newspaper Urban Trends column by Harold Kapindu, in case you missed it check it out here we made sure it’s available here for you.
Kukaya Festival was founded in 2016 in Mzuzu by Swagg Entertainment under Swagg group of companies as a movement aimed at creating a platform for local artists, especially from the north, to showcase talents and groom their art into business.
Three years down the line, the first Kukaya Festival edition took place in August 2019 with almost all local artists involved from the likes of Patience Namadingo, Gwamba, Macelba, DJ Wayne, Krazie G among others.
However, what was meant to be Malawi’s northern region born and bred arts festival grand launch, was marred by low turn out despite the high profile list of headliners.
But, that’s water under the bridge. The vision still lives and Kukaya festival is destined for greatness.
In the wake of Covid 19 global pandemic, with so many events being cancelled, the festival’s organisers have recently announced the festival’s return scheduled be held virtually from 1st to 3rd May, 2020.
In partnership with the country’s number one entertainment live streaming site and 2019 Lake of Stars official media team, Zonse Live, the festival will be hosted on both Kukaya and Zonse Live social media platforms as well as on the website.
Using modern technology, all the artists will apparently be performing from their respective residential locations as per government and health experts recommendations of isolation and social distancing.
In line with the festival’s main objective, all the partners and artists have given their time and resources to the project for free, as part of their social responsibility initiatives, to ensure the Covid 19 pandemic message reaches as many people in the country as possible.
Urban Trends hails this brilliant humanitarian gesture.
We look forward to seeing more partners coming in as Kukaya seeks partnerships with the media in as the festival will be preceded by a Covid19 sensitisation campaign.
Spearheaded by a number of artists involved in the project, Kukaya continues providing entertainment in a safe and responsible manner whilst still ensuring that their collaborating artists are able to sustain some income during this difficult time.
On behalf of Kukaya Festival organizers, Urban Trends would like to thank Nyali Muzik, ZonseLive, Swagg Entertainment, Green Jamz Records, 1Lord Records, Mario Bros and The Festival Institute for their partnership on this great initiative.
