Social media is currently awash with reactions following the release of UMP Best of the Decade Honorees on 30th December.

Reacting to the news, Hip Hop Act of the Decade Honoree, Gwamba questioned on the criteria, saying such awards are based on statistics.

“Voted? You don’t vote for such. You simply look at statistics,” observed the 9 time award winning rapper, Gwamba.

According to UMP co-founder Ken Zizwa, the honorees were announced as voted by experts, stakeholders and the general public via social media.

“The UMP Best of the Decade honors are in consistent with the brand’s mission to recognise and promote excellence in our local urban industry.

“Smilarly to the 2019 UMP Music Awards, UMP seeked inputs from several experts and stakeholders, saying some of which inputs were published online, and also UMP engaged the public through social media polls,” Zizwa explained.

Some of the media experts views published on the UMP social media platforms included those of UMP Online Journalist of the year Harold Kapindu, Media Consultant and Entrepreneur Kimpho Loka, The Nation Journalist Brian Itai, ZBS TV presenter Luna Mpinganjira and Radio/TV presenter/Media consultant Sam Kabambe.

However, the list of UMP Best of the Decade honors did not go down well with Videographer, Ronald Ron Cz Zeleza who accused UMP of practicing a fraudulent system.

“Votes don’t really count. UMP chooses who they want. I rest my case,” Ron CZ posted on his social media, “I can go on all day and explain their fraudulent system. But they are business men. I wouldn’t want to bring down their hustle.”

The post followed after it was revealed that Sukez is the UMP Best Video Director of the Decade.

“Not being bitter or what, it’s been a great 10 years of my career and still going and putting in work not stopping. From next year, please distance me from these awards. Am good at what I do and whatever criterion you use, stop embarrassing my name over and over,” Ron CZ continued.

On his part, musician Saint downplayed the blame game, saying the criterion is the same elsewhere.

“It’s always like that anywhere in the world. As for Malawi, awards are good for the industry as a whole. Not one person deciding the winner otherwise you will end up hating the actual winners and organizers for nothing,” posted Saint on his Facebook page.

In another development, Kenny Klips and Dare Devilz were finally honored with Best DJ of the Decade and Best Group/Duo of the Decade respectively.

Gospel Urban Act of the Decade honoree is Suffix who expressed ignorance on honorary award when contacted for a reaction.

“Okay, that’s strange. I didn’t know that there was this poll. However, am excited and encouraged by the love that people are showing me out there,” Suffix said.

Male Artist of the Decade went to Piksy while Female Artist of the Decade honoree is Sangie.

The Late Mafunyeta has been honored with Dancehall Act of the Decade, Lulu with Best R&B/Afro Pop Act of the Decade and DJ Sley has received Best Producer of the Decade honors as well as Black Missionaries as Best Band of the Decade.

Maskal has been honored with three awards including Best Song of the Decade for “Udalire”, Best Album of the Decade for “Nthawi” and Best Collaboration of the Decade for “Wa CV feat Piksy”.

“Chipapapa” by Tay Grin is Best Music Video of the Decade, Faith Mussa is Best Live Act of the Decade and Lawi is Best Afro Soul Act of the Decade.

UMP has also honored Nde’feyo Entertainment as Best Record Label of the Decade, Fm 101 as Best Urban Radio Station of the Decade, MBC TV as Best Television of the Decade, The Nation as the Best Print Newspaper of the Decade and Nyasa Times as Best Online Publication of the Decade.

Best Music Festival has gone to Lake of Stars while Best Music Venue has gone to Blantyre/French Cultural Center.

The UMP honors have further coincided with UMP 10th anniversary.

“We wanted to take a look back at the most successful 10 years of Malawi urban music and culture by honoring the “Best” in several categories,” Zizwa said.

According to Zizwa, UMP has lined up several exciting initiatives which will be announced in due course.

He urged people to keep checking and subscribe UMP website www.ump-awards.com for updates.
